How to Make Sweet Potato Stuffed Chapathi
This paratha is made in two simple parts β the filling and the chapathi. Both are easy and come together beautifully.
Start with the filling. Heat a pan and add butter. Once the butter melts add the chopped garlic and red chilli flakes. Let them sautΓ© in the butter for a few seconds until fragrant.
Add the boiled and mashed sweet potato and salt. Mix everything really well until the butter, garlic and sweet potato come together into a beautiful smooth filling. Add fresh coriander leaves and mix again.
Shape the filling into small round balls β one for each paratha.
Now take your chapathi dough and roll it out slightly. Place one filling ball in the centre, bring the edges together and seal well. Gently roll into a chapathi β be gentle so the filling doesn’t come out.
Toast on a hot tawa with butter on both sides until golden and slightly crispy on the outside.
The inside will be soft, buttery and perfectly spiced. The outside golden and lightly crispy.
Serve with a small cup of curd and enjoy. π§‘π€
Soft, spicy, buttery and super delicious β just like the chef on TV promised all those years ago. π

Pro Tips for the Softest Sweet Potato Chapathi
- Mash sweet potato really well β no lumps in the filling gives you a smooth even stuffing that rolls easily.
- Seal the dough well β pinch the edges firmly before rolling so the filling doesn’t burst out.
- Roll gently β don’t press too hard while rolling. Gentle rolling keeps the paratha soft and the filling intact.
- Toast with butter on both sides β butter gives the paratha a beautiful golden colour and rich flavour. Don’t skip!
- Serve immediately β sweet potato paratha is best eaten hot off the tawa. Soft, warm and buttery! π€
- For lunchbox β wrap in a clean cloth or foil to keep soft for longer.
- Adjust chilli flakes β reduce to a pinch for very young kids. The sweetness of sweet potato balances the spice beautifully even with full amount.
What to Serve With Sweet Potato Stuffed Chapathi
The simplest and best combination is plain cold curd β just like I serve it at home. π₯
The cool curd balances the warm buttery paratha perfectly.
You can also serve with:
- Mint chutney
- Plain yogurt with a pinch of salt
- Tomato ketchup for kids who love it
- Pickle on the side for adults
But honestly β just the paratha with cold curd is absolutely perfect. Simple and complete. π€
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this for babies and toddlers?
Yes! This was the first stuffed paratha I made for my son at 2 years old. Skip the chilli flakes for very young babies and reduce salt. The sweet potato filling is naturally sweet and soft β perfect for little ones learning to eat. π€
Can I prepare the filling in advance?
Yes! Make the sweet potato filling ahead and store in the fridge for up to a day. When ready to make just stuff and roll the parathas fresh. But when making for kids donβt use the stored once. Fresh is always better for kids
How do I keep the paratha soft?
Toast on medium flame β not too high. High flame makes the paratha dry and hard. Medium flame with butter gives you soft golden parathas every time.
Can I use regular potato instead of sweet potato?
Yes β regular boiled potato works well too. But sweet potato adds natural sweetness and extra nutrition that makes it especially good for kids.
Is this good for lunchbox?
Absolutely! Wrap in a clean cloth or foil and it stays soft for a few hours. Perfect for school lunchbox or office lunch. π±
Can I make the chapathi dough with whole wheat flour?
Yes β whole wheat flour makes it even more nutritious. This is what I use at home for my kids. π€
