Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any rice instead of jeeraga samba?
Yes absolutely! Any rice works β€” basmati, ponni, sona masoori. Just adjust the water quantity according to the type of rice you use. Jeeraga samba gives the most fragrant result but all versions are delicious! 🍚

Why soak moong dal overnight?
Soaking overnight ensures the moong dal cooks at the same rate as the rice in the pressure cooker. Without soaking the dal may remain slightly undercooked while the rice is perfect. Always soak! 😊

Can I use garam masala instead of biryani masala?
Yes! Both work beautifully. Biryani masala gives a slightly more aromatic flavour. Garam masala gives a bolder spicier result. Use what you have at home! 😊

How many whistles for this recipe?
2-3 whistles on medium flame gives perfectly cooked rice and dal. If using regular ponni rice go for 3 whistles. For soaked basmati 2 whistles is enough.

Is this good for kids lunchbox?
Absolutely! Protein packed moong dal rice is perfect for kids. Reduce green chillies for younger kids. Nutritious, filling and delicious! 🀍

Can I make this without curd?
Curd adds a beautiful subtle tang and soft texture to the rice. You can skip it but the texture will be slightly different. Use it if available! 😊
