Jackfruit Halwa | Summer Vacation Recipe 🍈

Every summer without fail β€” all of us cousins would land at Amma’s village home. It didn’t matter where everyone was, how far they had to travel β€” when summer came, everyone came home. 🀍

Those days were something else entirely. Eat, play, repeat. Cycling on rented cycles for 1 rupee an hour through the village roads. Cousins everywhere. Noise and laughter filling every corner of that house. And at the end of every summer β€” all of us crying when it was time to leave, already counting the days until next year.

Those were the best days of my life. πŸ₯ΉπŸ€

And in the middle of all that summer magic β€” there was always Chinna Thatha’s jackfruit halwa.

Our chinna thatha would get a big jackfruit β€” big enough to feed the entire family of almost 30 people. He would make this halwa in a large batch, and when it was ready he would make everyone sit in a row on vazha ilai β€” banana leaves β€” and serve the hot halwa to each one of us.

Hot jackfruit halwa on a banana leaf. The smell of ghee filling the air. All the cousins sitting together in a row. Chinna Thatha serving everyone with such love and care.

I am a huge jackfruit lover β€” I could eat jackfruit for breakfast, lunch and dinner without complaint. πŸ˜„ And this halwa was everything to me.

Now we are all scattered across different parts of the world. Busy lives, different cities, different countries. Those summers feel like another lifetime.

But every summer when jackfruit season arrives β€” I make this halwa. Just 3 ingredients. Just a pan and some ghee. And for a few minutes β€” I am back in that village, sitting on a banana leaf, waiting for Chinna Thatha to serve me. πŸ₯ΉπŸ€

This one is for you Chinna Thatha. Thank you for those summers. Thank you for this halwa. Thank you for everything. πŸ™πŸ€

Why You’ll Love This Jackfruit Halwa

🍈 Just 3 ingredients β€” sweet jackfruit, jaggery and ghee. Nothing more needed!

🌿 Traditional recipe β€” passed down through generations in our family village home.

✨ Naturally sweet β€” the sweetness of ripe jackfruit combined with jaggery is absolutely divine.

🧈 Ghee added little by little β€” gives the halwa its beautiful glossy melt in mouth texture! 😍

πŸƒ Serves on banana leaf β€” the most traditional and beautiful way to eat this! 🀍

β˜€οΈ Perfect summer recipe β€” jackfruit season is halwa season!

πŸ₯Ή Tastes like home β€” every single time. 🀍

How to Make Jackfruit Halwa

This halwa is made with just 3 ingredients β€” but patience and love are the secret ingredients that make it truly special. 🀍

Take a pan and add a little ghee. Add the chopped sweet jackfruit and fry for some time β€” let the jackfruit get slightly coated in the ghee and begin to soften.

Now add a little water, close and cook until the jackfruit becomes really really soft. Don’t rush this step β€” properly softened jackfruit gives the halwa its best texture and flavour.

Once the jackfruit is completely soft and cooked β€” add 1 cup powdered jaggery and mix everything really well.

Don’t panic when it becomes a little liquidy at first β€” that’s completely normal! The jaggery melts and releases moisture. Just keep stirring continuously and slowly you’ll see it start thickening beautifully. 😍

Add a pinch of salt β€” this enhances all the flavours beautifully. Add a little cardamom powder for that warm fragrance.

Now keep adding ghee little by little while stirring continuously β€” this is what gives the halwa its beautiful glossy melt in mouth texture. Don’t add all the ghee at once β€” little by little as you stir.

Once the halwa starts leaving the sides of the pan β€” your jackfruit halwa is ready! 🍈🀍

Serve hot on a banana leaf if you have one β€” just like Chinna Thatha used to serve us. πŸ₯ΉπŸ€

Soft, glossy and absolutely melt in mouth.

Pro Tips for the Perfect Jackfruit Halwa

  • Use sweet ripe jackfruit β€” the riper and sweeter the jackfruit the better the halwa. Don’t use unripe jackfruit for this recipe!
  • Cook jackfruit really soft β€” don’t rush the cooking step. Properly softened jackfruit gives the best texture and blends beautifully with the jaggery.
  • Don’t panic when it becomes liquidy β€” after adding jaggery the mixture will become liquid. This is normal! Keep stirring and it will thicken beautifully.
  • Keep stirring continuously β€” once jaggery is added keep stirring without stopping. This prevents burning and gives even texture.
  • Add ghee little by little β€” don’t add all the ghee at once! Adding gradually while stirring gives the halwa its beautiful glossy melt in mouth texture. 😍
  • Pinch of salt is important β€” it enhances the sweetness and rounds off the flavour beautifully. Don’t skip!
  • Ready when it leaves the pan β€” when the halwa starts leaving the sides of the pan it’s perfectly done!
  • Serve hot β€” jackfruit halwa is best eaten hot fresh off the stove. 🀍

What to Serve With Jackfruit Halwa

The most traditional and beautiful way β€” serve hot on a banana leaf. πŸƒπŸ€

Just like Chinna Thatha used to serve us β€” all 30 of us sitting in a row, banana leaves spread out, hot halwa served with so much love.

If banana leaf is not available β€” serve in a bowl. But if you ever get the chance to eat this on a banana leaf β€” please do. The experience is something else entirely. πŸ₯ΉπŸ€

This halwa is complete on its own β€” no sides needed. Just the halwa, served hot, eaten with love. 🀍

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use canned jackfruit?
Fresh ripe sweet jackfruit gives the best flavour and texture for this halwa. Canned jackfruit in syrup can be used but drain and rinse well β€” reduce the jaggery quantity as canned jackfruit is already sweet.

Can I use sugar instead of jaggery?
Jaggery gives this halwa its traditional flavour and beautiful colour. You can use sugar but the taste will be different β€” less deep and less traditional. Jaggery is highly recommended! 🀍

How much ghee should I use?
Start with ΒΌ cup and add more as needed while stirring. The halwa should be glossy and moist β€” not dry. Keep adding little by little until you get that beautiful glossy texture. Up to Β½ cup is fine.

Why add salt to a sweet halwa?
A pinch of salt in any sweet dish enhances the sweetness and rounds off all the flavours beautifully. Don’t skip this step β€” it makes a real difference!

How long does jackfruit halwa last?
Best eaten fresh and hot!

When is jackfruit season?
Jackfruit season in India is typically April to June β€” peak summer! That’s when the sweetest most flavourful jackfruit is available. The perfect summer halwa! β˜€οΈ

A Note From My Kitchen 🀍

I close my eyes and I can still see it.

All of us cousins sitting in a row on the floor. Banana leaves spread out in front of each one of us. Chinna Thatha moving from one to the next β€” serving hot jackfruit halwa with such quiet love and care.

The smell of ghee. The sweetness of jackfruit. The sound of everyone eating and talking and laughing. The warmth of that village home in summer.

Now we are scattered across the world. Different cities, different countries, different time zones. Those summers feel like a dream sometimes.

But jackfruit season always brings it back. πŸ₯ΉπŸ€

I make this halwa every summer β€” just 3 ingredients, just a pan, just some ghee. And for a few minutes β€” the world shrinks back to that village, that banana leaf, that row of cousins, and Chinna Thatha’s loving hands serving each one of us.

Some memories live in food. This one does. πŸ₯ΉπŸ€
